George Locker has kindly made an engine for the children at the Phoenix ward as part of our pre-Christmas drive. It’s an unknown species of wood for the body, but something close grained. The accents are purpleheart which set really set off the engine. I’m sure the children will love it!
He also sent in photos of the other pieces he has been working from as part of the lockdown; George says the following
In the news letter it was mentioned that they would like to hear or see what we had been making during the Corvid closedown?
Well, the other day my kids said to me "What did you do during the Covid war Daddy" I said I was sleeping!
Secretly I had been getting things made for their Christmas presents!
Thank you very much George for sending these in, we look forward to seeing what other creations you can make!

Dennis Carter has made some fantastic pieces in this month’s project. The first is a 7” x 3” Burr Oak bowl. The other piece is an Ash crotch at 9” x 2”. To keep the depth of the bark of the burr oak shows Dennis’ skill; he has successfully kept the edge which creates a lovely contrast in the piece. The dome shape of the Ash piece really captures the light well, and gives another dimension to the bowl.

Thanks to Dennis Carter for sending his lighthouse in. Dennis says that he finds lighthouses create interest at craft fayre’s and sell well. The Column is made from sycamore, the lamp is sycamore/sapele veneer, and the roof is a black walnut.
The Sycamore looks slightly ‘weathered’ creating an illusion to a lighthouse battered by the sea. Further, the shine of the veneer contrast particularly well against the body, creating a ‘light effect’. The picture is placed to show the remnants of what looks like the pith, creating a door shape. I’m sure you’ll agree this is a fantastic piece and well considered. Thank you Dennis!
Ted Higgs has finished his home repairs and some other projects in the workshop, his latest project is a pair of salt and pepper grinders. He says;
I have just finished a pair of contemporary salt and pepper mills using the CrushGrind mechanisms and the handy guide found in the back of the Stiles and Bates catalogue. I distressed the body using a V bit in my Dremel and the boss is very pleased with them.
